Fisherman

2024

Spray paint, plaster, fish hooks, fishnets, fishing vest

"Fisherman" is a wearable art piece that explores the tension between humanity’s romanticized relationship with the ocean and the stark reality of its exploitation. Drawing on the iconography of fishing culture, the ensemble juxtaposes vibrant aesthetics with unsettling undertones, offering a layered commentary on consumption, environmental degradation, and identity.

The fly fishing jacket and button-up shirt gesture toward tradition and utility, grounding the piece in the imagery of the everyman fisher. However, these elements are subverted by the inclusion of fishnet tights on both the legs and head, which simultaneously evoke a sense of entrapment and vulnerability. The fishnets hint at the entanglement of marine life in discarded nets and the broader entrapment of the ocean in human exploitation.
